Chapter 11

Mac watched Millie’s retreating backside disappear, then he headed for the library and the secret passage. He didn’t buy the Perrys being the guilty party. There’s no way they knew about this passage. At least he was pretty certain they couldn’t have. When the Sheriff got called away, Mac went on to chat with the librarian. He’d learned a few things about local history but she had no idea a secret passageway had been included in the old inn nor did she know anyone who might know. She’d once heard a rumor that the old house plans had been found but nothing ever came of it and she’d never seen them. She didn’t know where the rumor started. Small towns worked that way. Someone heard something from someone who’d heard it from someone else. No one knew who started the whole rumor. During remodeling the carpenter didn’t notice it. So it couldn’t have been an easy find. Whoever had access to the tunnel had to have had an opportunity to find it—or plans showing them exactly where the secret passageway began and ended.

He slipped through the secret opening then quietly closed the book shelf behind him. His flashlight lit up the dark area quite well. It would be slow going but there had to be something, some sort of clue, which would explain why the tunnel was in existence. He hadn’t gone twenty feet when his flashlight started to grow dim. He hurried back the way he came and left the book shelf slight ajar as went in search of fresh batteries.

Mac checked all the usual places and no D batteries were anywhere to be found. Irritated but determined, he drove to the corner convenience store and bought a package. If Millie had been with him she would have had a fit over the price. Time was of the essence. He didn’t want to waste a minute running to the big box store. With the Perrys in jail, the others would be heading home as soon as they returned from their outings. If Mac was correct, letting them go would be a huge mistake. His gut told him there was more to this story. Why would the Perrys go out of their way to make this murder look like the one previous? If they wanted to kill the old woman, they would have just murdered her and took off for heaven only knows where—right after the deed was done. He shook his head, doubt clouding his mind more than ever, and paid for his batteries.

He hurried home to the library. He paused upon entering the room. I thought I left that doorway open. Huh. I must be losing it. Mac opened the secret door and let himself through, his flashlight illuminating his path. He took his time. He sniffed the stale air. Strange, smells like Millie’s perfume. Shining the light against the walls of the passage, looking for anything out of the ordinary. There must be some sort of clue as to why this tunnel is here.
